Who cannot donate umbilical cord blood stem cells for public storage at the Alberta Cord Blood Bank?
Ø Any history of maternal illness or complications at any time during the pregnancy or delivery
Ø Prescribed maternal medication for any reason during pregnancy*
Ø Donor mother must be over 18 years of age. Conception must have occurred before the age of 36 years
Ø Multiple births: Twins, Triplets or more **
Ø Family history of inherited or acquired blood disorders
Ø Family history of inherited or acquired immunological disorders
Ø Family history of early childhood deaths
Ø One or both parents adopted ***
Ø Parental consanguinity (blood related marriages up to first cousins)
Ø Family history of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
Ø Malaria in the last three years
Ø Unable to donate blood for any reason
Ø Transfusion of whole blood, or other blood products received within one (1) year of conception and delivery
Ø Parental use of blood clotting factors
Ø Parental past history of Yellow Jaundice or liver disease
Ø Parental recreational drug use with a needle, even once
Ø Parental history of having had a tattoo, ear piercing, acupuncture, electrolysis, skin graft, injury from a needle, or having come into contact with someone else's blood in the past twelve (12) months
Ø Parental positive test for HIV, HTLV, HPV, Syphilis, Hepatitis A, B, or C
Ø Parental history of sexually transmitted diseases
Ø Sex with a male who has had sex with another male, even once
Ø Parental history of involvement in the sex trade
Ø Parental history of being a recipient of an organ transplant of any type
Ø Homebirth
*Medications have unknown side effects on cord blood stem cells. This is why they are excluded.
** Please notify the bank if having twins; in order to donate, you will need two kits.
*** If the family medical history is known, please state this on the registration form.
The above exclusionary criteria ensure the collection of safe samples for the public storage and use. Our exclusionary criteria comply with the applicable health regulations for the collection, storage and use of umbilical cord blood stem cells. This list is a guide only. Additional criteria may have to be met at the time of registration.
